Re: Backwater Tarpon

I depends on the rod. I have a Med that throws it better than another med-heavy. All I can say is give it a toss and find out.

Re: Backwater Tarpon

I edited 20 minutes down to 3 minutes of highlights. I was strumming the line to try to get the fish to move. It kept hanging right below the kayak. The fish rolled up at 15 min and I thought we were done but it took another dive and we fought for another 5 before the leader gave way.

Re: Glossary

BFL is the name of a lure made by DOA Lures. It comes in 2 sizes - 5.5" & 8" The body is rubber in the mold of a mullet. It has a hard plastic insert that acts as an air chamber to make the bait float. It also has interchangeable/removable lip system to tailor the action of the bait fo...

Re: Backwater Tarpon

That thing just looks wrong but I know it works for you. Especially in Cow Creek. Might have to invest. Most lures are made to catch anglers. DOA makes them to catch fish. This thing wiggles and rolls just like a mullet would. When you make it look wounded, it's all over... You should see what else...

Rik wrote:Cook, are you using that BFL even on the small guys?
Yes, sir. It has great action with the wide lip. You see how I am working it in the video. Sweep, pause/reel in slack, sweep... It's hard for them to resist.

I also pick up fish while trolling it behind the kayak.

Re: Backwater Tarpon

Anyone else notice that he got a little scared during the fight? I'm gonna grab that footage just for you. One thing I noticed was this fish fought differently. He was just sitting in the current directly under my boat and we drifted in the current at the same speed so there was no fighting g...

Re: Backwater Tarpon

That was fantastic! What is your camera setup? I have been trying to set up a similar shot. Thanks! I use a GoPro on a monopod in the rear rod holder. I have gotten pretty good at eyeballing where to point the camera. In the video, you can see me start to reach for it at least once. In the full ver...

Backwater Tarpon

I was seeing small fish in the 10-20# range all morning. It was a nice surprise when a bigger fish grabbed the BFL 5.5". I noticed a nick in my leader early on and thought "ah, it'll be ok. These fish aren't very big". Every time, it never fails... it comes back to haunt you later if ...

Re: Cross Bayou - Joe's Creek?

From Tampa? Not worth the effort. There are better places to fish closer to home. Cross Bayou is more of a locals fishing hole.

Re: Cross Bayou - Joe's Creek?

On Park st, north of 62nd but south of the bridge crossing the bayou, there is a small roadside launch on the West side of the street. Google Earth the area. There is a drainage pipe that runs under the road, that is where the launch is.

For a place called "Todd's Hole", I thought it was funny that Todd couldn't do anything but watch as I caught several fish right in front of him.

Re: Sabile Knot -Braid to Leader - Anyone Using It?

Do you really think a bimini twist is necessary when using braided line? Maybe not so much on the larger diameter lines. The smaller stuff, I recommend it. Have you ever made a cast and had your leader snap at the line/leader knot? The doubling of the braid keeps the knot from slipping and doesn't ...
