Nice report and pictures...sorry about the idiots . People like that give all boaters a bad name. On the subject of tailers...I believe the fishery for tailing reds is based a whole lot more on forage than latitude. Take Jacksonville/Fernandina for instance. J-ville is absolutely littered with...

Fishnfinatic...thanks. Tough to catch fish on fly without the line in the water . Just realize that your catch rate will decrease at times compared to artificial lures, although in certain circumstances, a fly will certainly outfish anything. Each fish on fly is very rewarding. I'm not a full-t...

Never been prone to dropping big coin on conventional rods...I've always used Berkley Series One rods, although I've also had great success with the $50 Berkley Bionix. I prefer to spend money on my reels.

Appreciate the nice comments. Islander, The fish had most of his body out of the water. He ate a #4 olive/white slinky-fiber minnow. John, I'll probably be spending more time here than I have in the past...there are alot more guys who frequent this site who enjoy my style of fishing than on most oth...

Sunday 8/13

Haven't posted a report on here in forever, so what the heck. Decided to take an afternoon solo excursion to one of my favorite areas along the southern Big Bend. I picked up a ~28" red on fly pretty quickly before the storms forced me to take cover. Heck of alot of fun on a 6wt in 3" of w...

Shimano Calais, Chronarch, Chronarch SF. I use stradic 4000, but I'm having problems with my gears grinding, so I will be trying okuma now. There's likely nothing wrong with your reel...it probably just needs more routine maintenance. Heck, the most expensive reels Shimano builds require fairly cont...

Congrats...that's not something you see frequently up this far north. As much fishing and paddling as I've done on the Big Bend coast, I don't think I've ever seen/hooked/caught one less than ~30-40lbs. Most are 70lbs+.

Nice red Jon. Like the shirt too...if it doesn't have plenty of holes and blood stains, it ain't suitable for fishing ;).

Dunfly,
I have great success with single hooks on larger topwater plugs. I use 6/0 Owner Aki's on my Skitterwalks.

I got into yak-fishing to gain access to areas that are too hazardous/shallow for 99% of boats. I'll never be without a boat though...I enjoy too many varieties of fishing that are impossible/dangerous in a kayak.

That's one of my favorites, or better yet, mention a creek or bay by name that doesn't exist :D. Have people scouring the map for hours...

Good fishermen only share their spots with a select few people (if that), and definitely not on an open forum. The more people that frequent an area, the more likely someone might see you catch a fish. That's always bad news. With the range limitations of a kayak, even sharing access points is a no-...
