Re: One Fly Tournament July 12th
Had no clue Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle and ladyfish are "trash fish." What a derogatory label for any fish.

Ribbonfish and cutlassfish are the same thing.

Re: Sheepshead... on topwater!
I caught a large sheepshead on top water in Miguel Bay several years ago with Ray Markham. I've caught a couple on jigs and a few on fly.
But your catches certainly are more impressive.

The Old Man Tears Them Up on the River
Hank joined me today for some fly fishing at a new spot that both of us have been wanting to try for years. I'd rate the action 4 on a scale of 10. Still, it was fun. We caught bass, bluegill and stumpknocker -- mostly on poppers. A few fish were caught on my Myakka Minnow and a nymph under a strike...

Please elaborate.scuba steve wrote:I am torn actually. The johnson is a classic and always will be but I have been on a an Aqua Dream kick lately and I have found some neat little tricks you can do with an Aqua Dream spoon that you wouldn't be able to do with a johnson spoon.

Haven't hooked any on the Myakka.0119 wrote:I'm surprised you don't hook any when you are on the Myakka north of Border Rd. Must be a blast of a fight on those light rods. Great pics as always, I miss your old freshwater fly forum!

I don't necessarily disagree with you, and I don't have plans to do it.krash wrote:Fishing bedding peacock bass should be illegal.... there should be no pride in catching them its just to easy kind of like catching fish in a barrel with a grenade. (Sorry guys but this is MPO)

Re: Spring Panfish
Funny thing happened the other day when I was fly fishing the Manatee River with Patrick O'Conner. We were catching some big bluegill and channel catfish when I said, "I've never caught a speckled perch (crappie) in here, but this would be the spot." Next cast, he hooks and lands a speck! ...

Re: Peacocks in Lakes and Canals of Miami
Great fish. Wish we had them. I've had the opportunity to fish for them several times in Broward County and Miami-Dade County. I had a spot along Alligator Alley where I was catching them on fly rod, but haven't caught any since the 2010 freeze. I've found that when they're on their beds, you can ca...

Channel Catfish on Fly Rod
I don't target them, but I hook them pretty often. They're a lot of fun and fight better than most anything you'll hook in fresh water. Really neat fish. I usually get them on subsurface flies I'm casting for bluegill. Here's a blog piece I wrote on fly fishing for catfish: http://gibbysfishingblog....

Manatee River on the Fly
Pat and I hit the river early Friday. Our hands were numb (yes, we're cold wimps) as we paddled upriver in 48-degree air. The action was cold as the air for the first hour. I did hook something large, but broke it off. We found an area holding fish and Pat started catching when he switched to a No. ...

Re: winter wading?
I wet-wade pretty much until the water gets too cold in mid-December. After that, I'm fishing other waters where wading isn't required. I wear Sperry Ebb-Tide Mid Water Boot: http://www.sperrytopsider.com/store/SiteController/sperry/productdetails?stockNumber=0746792&showDefaultOption=true&s...

Nice fish. Great photos. Looks like you had a great time! Where did you launch? In addition to plastic worms, what else did you catch them on?
