Mike,
At least until you get the hang of the sight-fishing gig, do yourself a favor and find somewhere with shallow mud flats and off-color water, not clear water grass flats. Tailers over grass are often more finicky, spooky, and generally harder to catch. Fish over mud are stupid.

Way to go! I have got to get back into the tarpon deal once of these days.

Re: Lightning Shots 5/15 & 5/17
Rik, I have a network of eight Nikon D5000's and D5100's in different locations. Each camera has a custom micro-controller board that communicates over a fiber-optic link to a control PC. The micro-controller is interfaced with the remote shutter release port of the camera. The cameras all operate i...

Re: Tarpon Flies
For small snook and tarpon, nothing beat the excitement of the topwater strike of a gurgler or deerhair slider. If they aren't aggressive on top, I like to throw something like a Puglisi Everglades Minnow. That fly is absolutely deadly.

Lightning Shots 5/15 & 5/17
We had some good storms this past week with better-than-normal optical viewing conditions. The first three are from 5/15. The first two are of a triggered lightning attempt that morphed into a 5-stroke natural lightning (only second documented case of this on record) and struck a telephone pole. The...

Re: Moving to Tampa
I have my best luck with tailing reds over grassflats using a deerhair slider/diver that pushes a bunch of water. They land softly and can be left in place without snagging in the grass. Now, the actual strike-to-hook-up ratio is not particularly good, but the strike is most of the fun anyway. If yo...

Re: Kinky Muddler attempt ....
Those look great...very similar to what I use for baby poons (kind of an elongated version of a Puglisi Glades Minnow).

Re: flurocarbon - "the geeks don't want no freaks"
Interesting test, but there are some problems. One thing that isn't a problem is using tapwater. The index of refraction difference between saltwater and tapwater isn't that much. What is a problem is that the spectrum of light from inside lamps is not the same as natural light, and also the camera ...

Re: Lightning Shots from Last Week
Bill, Shutter time was anywhere from 1.5 s up to 10 s and aperture was from f/22 to f/9. All of these were shot at base ISO. I shoot full manual and adjust the setting continuously depending on the light conditions (or lack thereof) and desired color-cast of the output. You are in a superb area for ...

Lightning Shots from Last Week
Had our first good convective storms of the year last week, one of which rolled through about 10 miles from my house. The visibility was pretty good for Florida. All of these were shot with a Sigma 10-20 mm lens. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/gators15/DSC_1064_copy.jpg http://img.photobucket...

Re: Tomorrow I be gurgling
I usually give a short, sharp strip to generate a "gurgle" and then pause. Most of the strikes seem to come on the pause.

Re: Tomorrow I be gurgling
Nothing wrong with that gurgler. That is without a doubt my favorite fly. IMO, there is nothing better for baby tarpon. I've also caught a pile of reds and big trout on them up here on the Big Bend.
