Shell Key Camping

Post by americanrobster »

Has anyone ever camped out there before? I am in the middle of cleaning out my garage and found my tent and I would like to do some kayak camping while we have such great weather.

Contact the Ft. Desoto Rangers office and get a permit and go for it! They can tell you all the rules and regs.

I used to camp there a lot, most excellent!

Did some research and came up with this... http://shellkey.org/index.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks pretty easy to obtain a permit.

It can be magical! I just can't recall clearly the times out there.

Used to do it all the time before the government saw fit to get involved. Some fond, and not so find memories.

I have been discussing a camping trip with some friends, sounds like a good place to start.

Be prepared for cooler inspections from the county mounties, we had some great times out there, some seriously great times.

It all changed when Florida Sportsman forum held a shindig out there, a 100 powerboaters partying all weekend, building huge fires and leaving trash all over ended the non-regulatory camping.

I miss those days.

did we ever go there? I have vague memories of Cheezits, a crack ho, and super glued tent zippers. But that might be something I saw on the interweb too! Man getting old sucks.

Sounds like it would be a great camping trip. I have been discussing this with my friend for a while. Also thinking about camping Anclote when the snook are thick.

Magical place, just pay attention to the rules.....and keep the "necessary fluids" in the...sleeping bag, hatch, tackle box, latrine bag (you will need one), etc. Just not in the cooler (visible)! :cool:
