Everglades Special

Post by Snook712 »

I really like the ES from Enrico Puglisi but those rascals are really costly. I have tried to tie them with EP fibers and sculpin wool but they are pretty crappy. Anyone tying them and can give some advice?

They are somewhat difficult to tie. I will say I bought one and it was the best $ I ever spent on a fly for sure. I caught 2 tarpon and many ladyfish on the one fly and it is till in good shape.
Best quality made fly for the $ and that EP glades special is truly a great pattern.

I've never attempted to tie one, but I know they're not easy. The Everglades Special is without a doubt my favorite tarpon fly for backcountry fish. Snook really like it as well. I have one sitting on my desk that has over 20 tarpon to it's credit (and it's still in good shape). They use Gamakatsu hooks that really keep a sharp edge. I buy a half dozen a year and that usually keeps me in business.

My tail looks really good (and the fly's tail does too.)

Those look really good. I have not seen them in the shop yet.

I might try to tie a few too...

The "EP Special" is at the shop Yohan.... the one's on the rack are all tied with ep fibers. That recipe on the link has wool listed for the tail material and ep for the head.

I tied mine with sculpin wool for the head and epfibers for the body and tail. It is OK but not great. Next step is to use ep fibers all around.

I went back to EP fibers for the whole fly. I am still working on it but found that by tying very small bundles of tan fibers on the top, both sides, and botom of the hook and then trimming close it gets the tightly packed effect of the EP ly around the head. It is a great fly but difficult to tie well.

If you want that tightly-packed fiber look without all the hassle, I suggest using a dubbing loop. Cut the EP fibers into 1" bunches, pack a whole bunch of them into a big loop in the tying thread, then spin the $#!t out of it. Once that's done, it should look like a big, fuzzy pipe cleaner. Wrap that around the hook shank, tie it off, then trim the excess into any shape you want. Great way to get a super-dense head without all the hassle. Also works well for Tarpon Toads, bass bugs, muddlers, etc.
