No Boating Zone at Gandy Powerplant Outflow, When?

Post by whodog »

Anyone know when the area around the outflow becomes a no boating zone?

I can't remember what date the signs have on them. I thought the exclusion started 11/15.

Thanks. I was fairly sure it started yesterday.

I think it's "no entry" until sometime in spring.

Great, then I should have nothing to worry about from the sheriff and FWC. They don't seem to care what violations take place when they are around. (This I have witnessed many times in that area. Sometimes they just sit there. Sometimes they would rather talk to their buddies/wife/girlfriend/etc. (They forget that sound travels quite far over water.) ) Now the USCG, that I take seriously. They don't mess around & have no sense of humor.

Last time I was admonished by the local guard on duty it was only 50 yards, but I could have misunderstood him.

Thanks!

I just added the updated information to Destinations - Tampa Bay- Weedon Island.

I also included a modified (crude) map of the power plant outflow area to more accurately represent the current status of that area.

From the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services
"Pinellas County

The Bartow Electric Generating Plant Manatee Sanctuary is a seasonal manatee sanctuary, containing approximately 12.07 ha (29.82 acres), at the warm water discharge of the Bartow Electric Generating Plant in Tampa Bay, Pinellas County. This seasonal closure will prohibit all waterborne activity at this site from November 15 through March 31.
