First catches of the year

Post by kmeng »

Hey there everyone. I wanted to give this report sooner but work has gotten in the way. I wanted to fish all last week because I had the week off but the flu got the better of me. Fast forward to Friday... I went out to Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs and went exploring. I found a nice salt water lake that was hidden from the wind for the most part. It was wonderful; nice holes, grass, potholes just about perfect!

On my first cast I caught this beauty of a trout in a big school of mullet

Not only was it my first trout of the year, but it was my personal best. I didn't have my law stick, but it was an easy 23-24"

After that fun fight, I hooked up with this nice little red. He was probably lower slot but he sure was a pretty one!

It was a great first day on the water. I ended up catching 2 more reds and another trout and 3 nice fat Sheepshead. All fish were released to be caught again

Nice day.
Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.

North of the causeway in the deep hole I caught a keeper size Gag grouper. There is also a wealth of goliath grouper in the 6 inch size. The cold water and poor weather on my days off has resulted in skunk after skunk. February should have conditions improving to make fishing more than a great day for paddling.
