Permit or Pompano

Post by Manning »

First the confession. No kayak was used here. Was out on a family boat trip in Sarasota Bay and just happened to take along my fishing rod with the Mirrodine Mini on it. While the family were sunning I took a few casts. Made a long blind cast and bang. My reel started to scream and line was disappearing at an alarming rate. I admit I had the drag set kind of lose as this is my trout rig. I finally got it stopped, but it continued to give me a good fight making lots of short runs. When I finally got it in sight I though I had a very big pompano. Once I got it landed it looked to me to be a permit and my first permit ever. My daughter Callie thought it was pretty cool too.

Looks like a permit to me and a good candidate for the grill!

Changed my mind :)

I had the same question, I caught what i believed to be a permit but after a lot of consultation was a very large pomp and from your picture it looks to be in the same spot.

Looks like a permit to me....but that may be just because I really really want them to start showing up in the area! I do believe it is a permit and I hope he has lots of friends.

It's really hard to guess... here is a diff. photo fomr the FWC web-site. Top is Florida Pompano, Bottom is Permit:

Image

Florida Pompano:
Common to 6 pounds; may reach 8 pounds
Fish may show yellow on throat, pelvic, and anal fins
Dorsal fin begins forward of anal fin
22 to 27 soft rays in dorsal fin
20 to 23 soft rays in anal fin
Have no teeth on tongue at any size
Up to 25" fork length

Permit:
Common to 40 pounds; may reach 50 pounds
Fish may show orange or golden tints around breast and anal fin
Dorsal fin begins over anal fin
17 to 21 soft rays in dorsal fin
16 to 19 soft rays in anal fin
Up to 48" fork length

Both can be good on the grille, (MPO -- I'm against killing Permit, but if its legal its a choice)

I am going to stay with permit. Based on the slope of the head, the angle of the fins and the size. Also like to think I caught my first permit.

I was thinking it was a pomp because the anal fin doesn't look like it starts directly below the dorsal but could be the photo's angle. Maybe it's a hybrid, great catch whatever species. :)
