Good guides gone bad...

Post by jbdba01 »

Two versions of the report, but equally applicable to any type of fishing.

The paddlefishing version
kayak ready to go - $1000
2 Rods and reels ready to go - $200
Gas to and from ramp - $25
Misc stuff (license, leader, tolls, hooks...) - $75
Beer - $9.99 (I'm cheap)
Total for outing - $1,309.99

The powerboat version
Stinkpot trailered ready to go - $12000
5 Rods and reels ready to go - $800
Gas to and from ramp - $50
Gas for stinkpot - $50
Misc stuff (license, leader, tolls, hooks...) - $75
Beer - $9.99 (I'm cheap)
Total for outing - $12,984.99

Guide to foobar the day and lose that 125lb poon - $3.99

I couldn't even see it, and could just barely feel it. Macro lens told the story - it cut 30lb braid like it was a single strand of thread. Rerigged twice before I found out what was up. I've no clue how it cracked - the previous week I had a poon on the same rod and had no issues. Found it while testing out the drag.

Take your panty hose off and run them through your guides, that will find them for you.

I learned the pantyhose trick from a kingfish guide. They mostly use mono and any ding in a guide will find mono in a hurry.

Q-tips work just as well.
Guide to foobar the day and lose that 125lb poon - $3.99
When you get them replace, don't replace them with the same ones. That looks like a tip-top with hardloy inserts, spend extra money on Silicon Carbide (SiC) insert. Well worth it for tarpon rods.

Good advice...that was my middle of the road rod. Best I can figure I hit a ceiling fan (although up close it looks like it took a beating). It's funny when you look at the guide itself you can't make out any of the details - like that small rust pit isn't even visible.

Todd, what are "panty hose"? I don't have any, you got any spares?

Had a couple of Shimano's tips do that, don't think I got the ceiling fan. Had the liner rings pop out on a couple too, PIA!

Pantyhose are what wives wear Nylons, with garters and a seam down the back, are what they wore before they were married.

I am an expert at destroying the guides. Thankfully, Noles is an expert at replacing them.

Missing periods are always a huge problem.
