Fished the high tide this morning in the vicinity of B.I.G and caught one fish, this little Snook. I hated to put her in the boat but she was hooked deep in the roof of her mouth and I needed the needle nose pliers to get her unhooked. after a bit of revival she swam away briskly. Judging by the markings on the boat she wet around 24-26 in.
Big Island Gap - Snook

You sure that snook isn't from Notre Dame? Nice hunchback!
Paddles - they aren't just for the bedroom anymore.

Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
nice fish! How's the fishing there? Is there grass flats along with mangroves?
Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
The area is underrated in my opinion. Along the north side of Big Island there are areas of grass bordered by sand flats and sandy holes within the grass. Ideal habitat IMHO. Oh and several cuts between the smaller islands with feeder channels galore. BTW, last Sunday there were several (I counted at least 6) rolling Tarpon in the larger body of water just north/northwest of the B.I.G. bridges but with just 10 lb. braid, I passed them up.
Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
Looks like it may be a Fat Snook. If it is, it's a big Fat Snook. They are rarely over 20 inches.

Interesting Rik, hadn't thought about that, you maybe correct.

Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
What kind of lure is that, looks like a cross between a gold dart and an RT slug.
You know what La Quinta means in English? Behind Dennys. MarkM
Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
Nice fish. I caught a couple small snook down near Miguel Bay last Sunday. They both spit the hook at the side of the kayak as I reached down to get them so I didnt have to handle them. I did roll over 3 or 4 bigger ones but I was too close and spooked them.
Im also curious about the dart looking lure.

Fat snook.
Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
Ya know, I don't know what exactly that lure is. I want to use up all the half bags/mixed bags of lures I have accumulated over the years and only had two of those in a zip lock. I lost the one that the Snook took by casting it into high Mangrove branches and having my loop knot fail shortly after landing the Snook. I guess the weight of the lure was a bit more than I am use to, 'cause I hooked a lot of branches that morning and had to stop several casts abruptly to prevent even more branch hook ups. Its a shame, that bait was perfect color for the tea colored water that morning.

The tail has an Exude circle thing.

Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
The bait was a 5 in. R/T Slug, I believe the N7BKG, Golden Pepper Shiner. The folks at Dogfish are ordering some in.
Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
Nice fish , I have a question when rigging those RT Slug's on jigheads , do you have the hook come out the belly or the flat side on the back ? Thanks.
Re: Big Island Gap - Snook
The belly.

Thanks for the reply.
