Jellyfish species???

Post by Tide1on »

Went out this morning after the F1 race to fish the last part of the incoming and then the outgoing tides.
Once on the water I saw these guys all over the area I was fishing.

A few times they got tangled in my anchor line. My guess is they sting and probably really good too by the looks of those tentacles. Needless to say I didn't do any wading today.
Anyone happen to know what species of jellyfish they are?

Looks like a Nettle. And, yes, those tentacles do sting. Nettles have closed beaches in Florida since they seem to come in great numbers.

We're you in Tampa bay or out on a beach?

You may want to give a general area. When they do show up its usually in large numbers. Those things can ruin a day.

Northeast of Tampa Bay? That really narrows it down Steve. Why not tell us where you came across them? Its not like you post any fishing reports here anymore, besides you may save someone a terrible day on the water.

Does this help? This came from the Tampa Bay Watch facebook page.

Has anyone recently seen a cannonball jellyfish in Tampa Bay? Cannonball jellyfish are most commonly known to inhabit the southeastern coast of the United States, including the Gulf Coast. These jellies prefer shallow, inshore areas during the fall and summer months, enjoying the zooplankton found in these waters. Cannonball jellies are easily identified by their thick dome-shaped bell which can reach up to ten inches in diameter. Their appearance is how scientists came up with their name as this creature is about the same size as a cannonball.

That wasn't me, I took that from Tampa Bay Watch Facebook page and thought it was relevant to the topic.
