Which braid to use?

Post by RadioNerd »

Question to the forum: What braided line are you using these days? I've been using PowerPro for seven or eight years now. I'm happy with it but I figure it's time to consider using something newer. I did a search and saw a couple of comments from 2012 about Ohero and FINS. Is anyone able to provide feedback on those lines or others?

Thanks!

FINS is good stuff. The windtamer doesn't absorb water like most of the other braids including some of the other FINS types.

I have used most brands of braid and prefer PowerPro. FINS is a little too "thick" for me. I have spoken to the people at Ohero and they're somewhat anti-kayak, so I crossed them off my list.

I've used most of them and seem to be stuck on Power-Pro and the Suffix Fuse 832.

Not really sold on the newer P-Pro Slick 8 can't prove it, don't have a rollout micrometer, but it sure seems thicker than standard P-Pro or Fuse, reading the diameter on the package and filling 2500/3000/4000 size reels with the same 8# mono backing I just can't get as much as I think I should. My fill method is load spare spool with braid first, then fill the rest of the way with the mono, then reverse fill my main spool.

I just put the Ohero Adrena braid on my CI4s a few weeks ago. So far I'm not a fan. The line seems to twist more than the PP8, it doesn't cast as far, and often wraps itself around the top guide of my rod. I also just put fins windtamer on another reel and prefer that to the Ohero. I'm going to give the Ohero braid on my CI4s a couple more months then likely go back to PP8.

Have you looked at the FINS Windtamer? While it feels stiffer than PP, it doesn't feel as thick IMO

I'll recommend Suffix performance & their 832. I have one reel with the PowerPro Super Slick, I like that stuff too.

I don't know what brand - it's blue in color - it was strictly a impulse buy!
I put it on a bait caster and it works well enough.

Blue Ohereo - 20#
Aqua FINS XS Braid - 15#

May drop to 10#...maybe.

FINS seems a bit pricey, but does the job. Feels like the same performance. Been using the Ohero longer than FINS and would probably stick with it.

Also used Ohero 40# for Poon and other larger fish - no issues.

Add me to that list too.

Wind Tamer 10 lbs. This is what I use for the flats. I like the smallest braid I can get away with, in order to make long casts to spooky fish.

Also Fins is made in the USA.

As for the other braids out there, I used Ohero a few years ago during a tournament series. Hated it. Very stiff and prone to twisting really bad.

Diamond Braid - I got some samples after ICAST 2012, I had 8lb or 10 lb as I remember. It worked fine for a few weeks then all of a sudden it started breaking (Rik can tell you all about it). Its like it rotted or something. It was the thinnest braid I have ever seen, looked like dental floss.

Power Pro - I have seen lots of reports lately on the interweb of guys saying how their Power Pro is breaking apart. I know a while back there was some fake stuff out there. (By the way, Power Pro is made in China)

I have one rod with PowerPro 15# and another with Suffix 15#. They are the same reels, I have notice more wind knots with the Suffix but I like the "feel" of it better than the PowerPro. They're both on Penn Battles BTW
