Water Proof Digital Video and Still Camera

Post by Manning »

Saw the new Kodak Play Sport video camera in a magazine the other day and thought it might work well as an inexpensive ($149) fishing accessory. Says it is waterproof in up to 10 feet of water. I already killed one camera out there in the kayak. Here is a review.

Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.

I was looking at that too, but decided to go with the Pentax Optio W80. I wasn't sure about the quality of still photo the Kodak would produce and the reviews I found only talked about the video quality. While the margin in quality is likely getting smaller and smaller, something tells me that a video camera that takes stills is not going to be as good at stills, and vice versa for the still camera that shoots video. That was my line of thinking anyway.

You've seen compressed video from the Optio—not HD, but not bad either. The stills are obviously not close to a DSLR, but in comparison to other point-and-shoots I've used they're pretty good. Overall I'm happy with it and don't have to worry anymore about dunking the Nikon. Only an idiot would let that happen.

I just ordered one of these:

I think the time lapse and hi def video features might be really cool. just mount it on the boat and time lapse your whole fishing trip.

Too cool!

My pentax finally filled up with water after spending a night in the rain and i like that this one can go to 60 feet

The PlaySport is a great camera unless you are mounting it to an ATV. Something in the motor causes interference in the video and makes it jump.

I cannot recommend the Fujifilm xp10. Mine lasted all of 23 pics, crashed, and was not exposed to water, heat, or being dropped. Even the 23 pics showed some shortcomings. The telepoto at 5X is not going to win any clarity awards. Called their 800# and the not so friendly voice said mail it in. When asked for the address she said you have a computer, look it up. Then states once they receive it it will be about 3wks for return. Setting$ aside to get the Pentax or Canon.

I've used a dicapac "baggie" over my existing cheap boat-camera. It did an OK job.

I took it diving to beyond it's recommended depth to about 40ft and didn't get water in it. Note that I consider any camera that makes it to the water as borderline disposable. I just buy another cheap one on ebay. Getting to the buttons can be a hassle, but it works for me.

Here's the product:

You can get them on ebay for $29. I use a cannon sd1000 I bought on ebay. Not bad for $85.

Here's some sample underwater photos

Since originally starting this thread I have had a change to look an and play with the Kodak Play Sport video camera. It really is a sweet little waterproof unit. At the last PTFS Pic and Sip two of our group told me that they are using this camera and love it. Only negative I have heard is that it has no flash unit in it. I saw them at Walmart for $129, but could probably find a slightly better price online. I am putting it on my Christmas wish list.
