Shad run going strong ....

Post by AndrewP »

For those who want to try something different ...... the shad run is going strong right now over here on the St. Johns River. Went out Saturday and stayed within a quarter-mile of the launch. Stopped counting after the 20th shad ...... was a fantastic day of almost non-stop action.

5wt rod/reel with sink tip line, and small, flashy weighted jigs (like a crappie jig) is all you need. Find some deeper water, let the fly sink and strip back fairly briskly. You'll be shocked at how much fight a 3-4lb shad puts up -- puts all other freshwater fish to shame. You get a solid hookup, and many times jumps like a small tarpon.

A couple photos (these were from a week ago) ... kinda hard to take good pics while fighting the fish and paddling your kayak all at the same time ......

enjoy

Lunch salad? Crunchy shad on a bed of fly line?

That looks and sounds like fun!
Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley
