I'm not sure if this is repairable, or even worth repairing, but I figured I would throw this out there.
Whenever I put my rod in the Scotty rod holder the last part of the butt of the rod seems to hang up on the way out. This also happens on my St Croix; howver that piece is more tapered so ths problem has come up yet. I say yet because it's a cork end, and I suspect that eventually it will have issues too. Here's what the rod looks like. It's not a 3 piece rod, but you get the idea. The handle looks identical.
So over time the rubber wrap (at leat it feels like rubber) has developeed a small crack. Over time it will just get worse. Does anyone have any thoughts on fixing it. Below is the photo. I can get a clearer pic if need be.
To me it almost looks like a design flaw because the way it's designed it will catch water.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Actually, I think the problem is the split grip. Full grips tend to fit the Scotty rod holders better. As you have learned, the split grips tend to hang up on the back of the holder. I don't know of any cost effective way to fix it that won't eventually develop the same problem.

Yeah...I even thought of sanding down the rod holder edges so that it was more tapered/rounded. It's basically a 90 degree lip hitting on the split grip as I pull it out. I suspect that would make the rod holder less effective - maybe.

Hmmm...I like that idea. I wonder if they make it that large a diameter.

I use Scotty Fly Rod holders even for my spinning rods. With those you just turn the rod and pull it out to the side, so you wouldn't snag the rear of the grip. I will work on spinning rods but not casting rods.
They use the same base as the regular Scotty mount.

Boughts a bunch of heat shrink tubing at Harbor Freight. The 1" barely fit - I needed a bit of soap and water to make it happen.
Needed a touch of glue to secure it. Not much.

It was a very creative idea. Almost looks like it's part of the rod. Took all of 10-15 min to fix. I went REALLY slow on the heat gun. I wasn't sure what the effect would be on the resin - slow and steady wins the race. When I read the heat shrink I thought it said 125 F - so I was getting nowhere fast; I had the gun on the lowest setting. Turns out it was 125 C. Dopt!?
I might add a touch of resin where the heat shrink meets the fiberglass on the rod. That way water can't seep in from the top down.
Need to avoid the issue with those fly rod holders.
