Used to be, I started with a Skitterpop or No. 10 popper, fished it all day and went home when the action stopped.
I've found that when the topwater bite slows or ends, it's often just beginning subsurface. Of course, a popping bug is an exciting fly to use and nothing quite compares to a fish rising to take it.
However, nothing beats a bent rod, either.
I like to use small nymphs, scuds and the Myakka Minnow. Adjust to the size according to what the fish want. I usually use No. 12 nymphs, but go as small as No. 14. For scuds, it's No. 14. I like the Myakka Minnow in No. 10 or No. 12.
When fishing nymphs and scuds, I like to use a strike indicator. Sometime the strikes are so subtle that you probably will miss most if you're not using a strike indicator. I like to use The Thingamabobber. It casts well, is very sensitive and easy to see. http://www.westwaterproducts.com/thingamabobber.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ever tried fishing the popper and nymph or popper and minnow in tandem? Especially with the minnow, twitching the popper gives the underwater fly great action and doubles your baits in the water.

Yeah, I try it from time to time. Especially if the fish start hitting the strike indicator. Then I go to the "popper and dropper!"

I like a hopper, and a popper with a nymph, the Hopper popper dropper!

Only works if you false cast 1,000 times to simulate the hatch.John wrote:I like a hopper, and a popper with a nymph, the Hopper popper dropper!
