That is what I used to call a moonfish over on the eastcoast. GREAT table fare, fried up with some hushpuppies, but a pain to clean and you got to have a mess of em, just like panfish, small filets, but very tasty. We used to get them under the docks on a tiny yellow permit jig.

Ft D Tuesday

Took a day off just for fishin and went to Ft. D this morning. Got out a little late because I forgot to set the timer on the coffee maker and me with out coffee is...., well, let's just say it ain't pretty. Sun was already up when I launched. Kind of worried about red tide, but fished the flats and...

Neil, great to hear you put your Dad on fish. Never pass up a chance to go fishin with him. I wish I had "just one more" trip with my Dad. Every one of them is special. He might not show it but I'm pretty sure he'll brag to some of his buddies that his SON put him on the spot for a big sno...

I use a 3 lb. neoprene covered barbell I bought at Sports Authority for 3 bucks. I use about 15 ft. of anchor rope since I only fish in very shallow areas. It seems to hold fine and makes no noise coming aboard or being deployed. I do have a 3# folding anchor, but it is noisy and the barbell holds m...

I stole a large freezer type Ziplock bag from my wife, in fact I stole several of them. In one I keep my Gulps, still in their bags and the pieces just go in the bottom of the big bag. Then I use another bag of the same type for my other plastics. No metal, cheap (as long as my wife keeps a supply) ...

I just bought some of the Mustads pictured above. Got them at DogFish Tackle on Park Blvd in Pinellas Park. Great store, by the way.

The hooks worked great with Gulp shrimp, as well as an array of plastics. Expensive but worth it. I'll be getting some more of them soon.

Clam Bayou

Got there early, immediately lost a good snook in the mangroves (mirro minnow), one more good hit without a hookup and that was it for the day. A few taps, but nothing to compare to the first hit of the day. Lots and lots of baitfish. Pretty weather, but once the sun was up the bite was done. Flippe...

Stellar!!! Since you had a banana on board, I think you get handicap points that would take that fish to 40". Of course I could be wrong, but it seems fair to me.

Terry, I used the doughballs to catch shiners too in freshwater. Those wild ones bring up a lot of big bass. You are right, just simple doughballs about 1/4" in diameter made from fresh bread (white bread) or the bisuit dough that comes in cans hold better on the hook. I used to chum with oats ...

Fresh bread or buiscut dough on a small hook (the smaller the better), like you might use for bream under a small cork. Redneck fishin at it's best. Good luck, brings back memories of riding my bike to any old "ditch" canal and catching fish.

Cut my teeth on catching mullet on doughballs when I was a kid over on the east coast. Used to use cane poles and catch them all the time. They were good fighters, too.

good idea

Great idea, Rik & Skeeter, to only list places that can handle 15 or 20 cars. I used the Destination page a few months ago when I was just beginning (I'm still at the beginning), but I do enjoy exploring and finding a new spot on my own. The nice thing about a kayak is you leave nothing behind a...

skunk trip

Floated Friday at Ft.D. Took live shrimp, but they died before catching anything but catfish. Nothing else that day. Saw reds, tarpon but none wanted what I had. Last week, went purist and got 3 reds, one slot, one lower and one over, all on artificials (DOA shrimp, first success with that bait). I ...
