Kayak Storage Help

Post by ZeroSix »

Need your ideas please. I just moved to a much smaller home with no inside storage capabilities. I have a small side yard where I am looking to build a 2x4 structure to hold my boats (2) off the ground and work in some sort of a top over it to keep the weather and sun out; maybe a WalMart-style tarp bungeed in place as I only need it to last for just over a year.

Anyone have any ideas that they have or have seen?

Thanks.

I just built a rack for my two kayaks on Saturday out of pressure treated 2x4s. It cost less than $30 to make and was very easy, I will post a pic of it if I can remember to take one tomorrow after work.

I built "bunk beds" for my kayaks. This isn't the best picture, but if you are interested, I can take more detailed ones when I get home from work. It is a very simple design.

I use ladder racks you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot. So far the first on I mounted has lasted about 4 years. I mounted them on my wood fence, but you could easily mount two on either side of two 4 X 4 posts.

When you store them they should be turned upside down so they will not develop a dent on the bottom where they rest on the supports.

Go by Robinson Preserve. They use large diameter drainage pipes that you slide a kayak into. I have seen up to three boats in one tube. Offers shelter from sun, wont rot if you just put it up on a few cinder blocks, and with a gate installed it will give you security.

Old school (KISS)...two cynder blocks per kayak, store upside down. $5

Or lag bolts/hooks and a couple nylon web straps, store as 2nd pic below - $10:

12 pack of Yeungling - $9.99 for hydration.

Here are a couple pics of the rack that I put together on Saturday...

You will need (8) 2"x4"x8' boards and appropriate screws (I used 3" outdoor wood screws). Cost for the wood was about $25.

The four runners on the sides are 8' long, the vertical corner pieces are 4' long and the cross members are 30" long. After cutting all of the pieces you should have (2) 6" pieces of scrap remaining.

I left 4" of post below the bottom cross members and 4" above the top. I plan on getting some sort of outdoor carpet to put on the cross members.

Chadryan.. slick simple setup.. I currently have a single high folding x style pvc with bit of line between... but may build something like you have there.

Is that cemented into the ground or are those just blocks ?
