Terry, I used the doughballs to catch shiners too in freshwater. Those wild ones bring up a lot of big bass. You are right, just simple doughballs about 1/4" in diameter made from fresh bread (white bread) or the bisuit dough that comes in cans hold better on the hook. I used to chum with oats first then just start catching them. Suppose anywhere you typically see mullet would be a good spot. A blast on an ultralite rig.

Well, hell, SOMEBODY has to catch lizardfish.

Mullets are the poor man's bonefish
You can catch them on a small fly that looks like a ball of dough or bread. Any smallish white or light yellow fly will do. It helps if you throw some small pieces of bread on the water, wait for them to start feeding and then drop your fly there. I small hook with a ball of bread on light tackle works as well.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I've been fishing in FLA for over 50 years and never knew you could catch them on a hook with bait. We use to snag them or pick them up by hand off the east coast beaches during the mullet runs.
Since I love bonefishing, I'm definitely going to target mullet. Sheesh. Fishing must really be slow for us to be talking about this.
ratherbefishing --- I use to love catching the wildshiners on a canepole and cork and then catching largemouth bass.... back in the good 'ole days.

Fishing really is slow if we are going to talk about bologna and my age.
It is true. Somewhere I have a photo of me fishing when I was three. That was 54 years ago when Florida didn't have condos and life was pretty much perfect here except no one that I know of was kayak fishing.

Terry, the trick we used on Anna Maria was to get some white bread, wet it a bit, take a cotton ball and pull it apart into shreds and then mix the cotton shreads and bread together and form it into a small ball. Keeps the ball together longer and works better for some reason, maybe the mullet are attracted to the cotton sheads? Good luck! ED.
Dang. How did I get through fishing life in FLA without learning all this cool stuff??annamariaslim wrote:Terry, the trick we used on Anna Maria was to get some white bread, wet it a bit, take a cotton ball and pull it apart into shreds and then mix the cotton shreads and bread together and form it into a small ball. Thanks, Ed. We truly need to go fishing together around AMI!

You know, it's probably just me but,
I love the look on the face of the mullet that is foul hooked in the
back. It is a mix of "Doh!" and complete maniacal mullet abandon.
I've seen that look on more than one "patient" up in "The Ward".
