Peacock Bass

Buzz,

You did not say where you were going in late October?? Peacock bass are in miles of canals and some lakes in Dade and Broward County. If you are the Miami area you should study the Florida Wildlife Commission maps of the canal system where there are Peacocks. If you can gain access to any of the residential lakes in the Kendall area you are in business. To avoid wasting a lot of time in searching I suggest the Tamiami Canal near Krome Av. Also, the canal that runs north from the Casino along Krome AV. We are not talking pristine waters there. Just be prepared for shoreline trash but the water quality seems OK. I assume you are a seasoned freshwater fisherman - BUT STAY ALERT FOR ALLIGATORS -there are many in those canals.

The airport lakes definitely hold Peacocks but there is only one public access and that is a public boat ramp on the south shore of the easterly lake. Fee is $6.00 I think. And, the guides hit those lakes hard and boat traffic is bad. Broward canals with Peacocks are also described in the Fish & game brochures but I am not familiar with that fishery. I do have access to a gated residential development in Pembroke Pines that gives up largemouth bass and the occasional Peacock Bass.

Good Luck.
