Standing...

Post by BrianW »

OK, I've been kayak fishing for about three years now but there is one thing I can't seem to do that most probably take for granted. Standing. I've tried, but almost bite it every time. My question is is other than the obvious(balance), whats the secret? Do you just give it a shot and go swimming a few times? Plus I paddle a T120 and I'm trying to find the best spot for foot placement. On the seat, in front of it or what? Any advice will be appreciated...

I stand just in front of the seat with my feet as far apart as possible from side to side and the toes always pointing forward for the best balance. The rest is just practice, practice, practice!
Good luck!!! although I'm sure it's a little tougher trying to stand in a Tarpon 120 than a RF14.

Getting your feet as far apart as possible is key... aim for at least shoulder width apart. Wear some swim trunks out one day and dont bring any gear, and just practice, it comes with time.

Here is my opinion-you can either stand or you cannot, pretty simple. I have stood with ease in every boat I have owned. I presently paddle a WS Tarpon 160 90% of the time and I can stand in it. It is not so much the boat but the person and their balance skill.

Centre of gravity has a lot to do with it too, the taller and heavier you are the harder it is!.

The sweet spot on a T120 (at least the older models) is the seat. Get your feet as far to the sides as you can.

Or a Stealth 12 or 14. I have a high center of gravity and have no problem standing in either one of those kayaks.

Standing in my Prowler is possible, but the footwells are a real pain. I have to try to pull my feet up under me then try to stand. I've given it up and just get out to wade as much as possible.

Another boat would be nice, but she who must be obeyed would not be thrilled.
