I Am Off the Water For A Few Weeks

Post by Manning »

On Friday I took the family for a stink pot outing. The tide was low so we decided to beach the boat and spend some time on a sandbar. I warned my wife and our daughter to watch where they were walking so that they didn't step on a sea shell. About a half an hour later I was walking along watching some fish activity and stepped on a shell in full stride. I knew immediately I was in trouble as the paid was bad. I had my fishing gear on the boat with me so we got out the first aid kit I always carry. We put on some antibiotic, were able to stop the bleeding and dressed the wound in the ball of my foot.

At the ER they took x-rays that showed that there was in fact a piece of the shell broken off deep in my foot. The shell fragment was actually up between the bones in my foot. The ER doctor said that given that the shell was so deep in and so close to the bone they thought it best if I see a podiatrist to have it surgically removed. Spent most of the weekend in bed with my foot up taking some antibiotics and pain meds.

Saw the podiatrist on Monday and he operated on it yesterday. He said that everything went well and showed me the shell that was removed from my foot. He loaded me up with more antibiotics and better pain meds. So, if this message has been rambling and a little incoherent it is because I am buzzing on Oxycodone.
Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.

No... fer real! I have serious issues being behind a guy that fishes out of a sit-inside in the AOY race.

I feel your pain. Having been stuck by a stingray some years ago, I know what you're going through albeit different. Speedy recovery my friend.

That sucks, sorry to hear that Steve. But, in all seriousness, why would that keep you off the water?

The wound is in the ball of my foot. The doctor orders and my own tolerance for pain tell me that I can not put any load on that foot. Doctor's orders also state that I have to keep it dry. I am sure I will know more after my first check-up next week.
