Great pattern! I used to love raccoon for a maribou substitute on smaller flies. haven't seen anyone tie with it in years.

What is that 'raccoon'? I looked briefly and couldn't find raccoon in anything other than zonker strips.

Any that, as he describes it, is seductive gets my attention.

Gotta believe an over pack of maribou would be a good substitue

It's not the same. Raccoon (or arctic fox) "breathes" differently. Can't explain it more than that. Put some of each on a hook, toss them in a bowl, and watch.

BUT - you could probably substitute maribou in this fly and it'd be just fine.

I keep checkin the coons in my neighborhood but none of them are chatruse.

But that soft racoon hair is differant than marabou fer shure.

I can see that is the major diff over a traditional toad on this fly. That and the bigg "buggy" eyes and no PITA yarn tie in.
Without the yarn I would believe this one not as bouyant as a toad initially on the drop. But maybe I'm wrong ?

Maybe I can track this down and steal her hat and offer her $8.40
