Camping and such

Post by MrSpectaculous »

I've been scouring the archives for information on tents and have settled on the Mountain Hard Wear Drifter. Now I need a good reccomendation for a Florida Friendly sleeping bag. Last time I was in was at camp when I was 10 and i'm sure things have changed a lot since then.

You will not be disappointed with the Mountain Hardwear tent. I have had one for over a dozen years and have had no issues after countless uses.
I haven't bought a good bag in the same amount of time. I have a Sierra Design 600 fill down bag. When new it was rated for 20 deg. I doubt it still holds that rating as down loses some loft over the years. I would be hesitant to make a recommendation on materials as technology may have changed since i have been in the market. Buy from a good co. And you won't be disappointed.

I use a fleece bag by Columbia. Nylon shell, fleece inside. Plenty good for our weather. They also do a very good job of being a liner inside a regular bag if you do venture out int he cold. I caution you to pay attention to the size of the bag when you go shopping. Like those 2 man tents that don't fit two men comfortably, many of the fleece bags are tight fits.

A tarp with two poles and a thread bear wool blanket.....

If it was good enough for the Confederate Army it should be good enough for you.

I have a lightweight Coleman bag that I discovered is waterproof........when I discovered my cheap assed Wal-Mart tent leaked, not just a little!
I like the Coleman bag though I do have a thicker one for "winter".

I prefer the Holiday Inn model myself. Sleeping temp is always just right, stays dry, and that thing is the softest most comfortable thing I've ever slept in while camping.

Buc I'm to old and soft for that. When I was 20 sure...A park bench and a newspaper would suffice. I rarely ever leave the state so it would have to be comfortable in warm weather. So far the Columbia Bugaboo seems to be my best choice so far. But you guys have given me lots of stuff to look at.

I have spent thousands of $ there over the years and never had an issue. Their return policy is top notch - you don't like, they take it back. No questions. Great company.

I think a Snuggie would be just the thing.

PS: I second Sierra Trading Post. I buy a ton of stuff from them at deep discounts and have never had a return problem.

Mountain Hardware makes the best bags too. In Fla. you shouldnt need anything warmer than 30 degree. If you arent going in the middle of winter, 40 degree is more than enough. For simple shelter and great sleeping look at Hennessy Hammock.

I have been thinking about the Clark Jungle Hammock......I know a few who have one and it is perfect for Florida weather....very lightweight and compact....
