PowerPro Super 8 Slick

Post by BryanS »

Has anyone tried it yet or know anyone who has? I have 300 yards of the 10lb Marine Blue coming early this week. I'm going to stick some on the new CI4 I picked up today.

I have the 15lb timber Super 8 Slick on my stradic fj.. Seems like a great line the few trips that I've used it. Curious to see if the slickness wears off with time.

Depends on the price per yard.....I have been using Daiwa Samurai for the last 2-3yrs and love it. Slick...it seems to hold it's color well, and smaller in diameter. BUT...it is pricey...haven't bought any in a while so I can't give you a cost. I get it at Bill Jackson's.

Time to re-line... I went out and picked up 3 spools, 10, 15,20 pound test, rated to be 2,4,6 pound thickness, PowerPro Super8Slick line.

Removed another brand of braid from my Stradic 3000 FI & 4000 FI reels and the mono backing, started from scratch using my spare spool.
Load up with the 150 yards of Power Pro.. woah wait just one minute :study:
The 150 yard spool of 15 fills the 3000, and hte 150 yards of 20 overfill's the 4000.. WTF
Power-Pro diameter advertised specs on the package:
15 = 4 pound diameter (.19mm = .00748")
20 = 6 pound diameter (.23mm = .00905")
How can that be, both reels are rated for over 250 yards of the equivelent diameter that the power-pro claims to be.
For comparison using Trilene-xt mono diameter specs:
4 = .008" diameter
6 = .010" diameter
Stradic rated capacity (Neither spool has rating for 4 pound test):
3000 = 6# @ 230 yards
4000 = 8# @ 240 yards

I mainly fish with these 2 rods on the kayak in 1 foot or less of water for Bonefish, and 4 to 6' of water for Permit, some day's I see the backing with either of these species and the previous braid that I was using (not power pro). I have used power pro on these reels and other reels for years prior to this and have no complaints or problems, just never took the time to check this out as I bought 300yd spools and filled as needed.

I backed off, loaded about 10 yards of 8# mono as a backing and attachment to the spool, but if I see the mono now it's over.

Has anyone taken a micrometer to PowerPro Super8Slick braid and measured it's average thickness/diameter ?

Do slick lines hold knots as well as the other lines?

I could be wrong, but Daiwa Samurai if not the first slick line, but definitely in the front group. I have been using it on my TDA from the get-go and have yet to have a single issue with knots or line strength. Also the diameter is definitely smaller than the standard braids. I still have and use the original line on my TDA's now for over 3 years. Only break I have had was from some oysters after fishing at Cedar Key.

Out of curiosity I measured some "regular" 15lb PowerPro that states it's diameter is equivalent to 4lb mono. It measured .009 to .010 on average.

Been using the timber brown since it came out awhile ago. When it was slick, knots were an issue, it had to be doubled. It didnt hold its color any better than any other superline, it wore off quickly as did the waxy slickness. I think its just like all the superlines, nothing better except at least it has more weaves compared to the original which is very dated. Basically like anything I buy from Shimano, a disappointment.

So it is closer to the average thickness/diameter of 6# mono.

I grabbed a new spool of Suffix 832 Fuse, 10# rated and it certainly feels thinner and softer to my old un-calibrated fingers.
