A kayak fisherman was killed by a shark off Maui. He was dangling his foot over the side and the shark came up and took his leg.

Just in case you didn't see that.......
Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley

8 shark attacks there this past year, with a bunch in Oct. A German tourist lost a arm and later died.
I think they have a serious shark problem, which they wont do anything about as Hawaiians hold sharks as sacred.

My thought as well. What would you have them do? Nets? A shark rodeo ala Jaws? Not picking a fight Bill. Just don't know a practical way to keep sharks and people apart in a State comprised of islands.

They have a different batch of sharks too. We have bull, hammerhead and lemon. They have great white, tiger and mako.... Size matters.

They do not have Great Whites in Hawaii, waters to warm.
And in the past they have gone out and hunted down and killed the shark. In most cases, its a Tiger Shark and if its hanging around one particular area, which it would seem in this case, they go out and get rid of it.
Having spent 8 years there, I've seen this before. The locals want it left alone, the tourism board wants it dead.

I think the guy who died and most of us have 2 things in common. 1. He was a kayak fisherman. 2. He didn't think it could happen to him.

http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/2411 ... newsnowcomA companion, also on a kayak, said the man was fishing with artificial lures to attract baitfish when his dangling foot was bit by a shark.
Could someone explain this tactic to me?

They don't have a shark problem . They have an over fished resource and the top predator is just changing items on the menu.
