There's been a lot of chat lateley concerning kayak mods, motors, stabilizers, etc.
There's also been chat about using 3-5 lures all the time.
Which method do YOU think is most productive?
Should you use technology to it's fullest (Techno) ?
... or ...
Should you keep a line in the water as much as possible (Retro) ?
Techno or Retro ?
Techno or Retro ?

The two biggest factors to cacthing fish as told to me by Merril Chandler
If you want to catch a lot of fish, you have to fish alot!
Catching fish comes with confidence, cofidence in your location, and confidence in your tackle.
Nail those two and it will come together for you

I couldn't agree more. Nothing has increased my ability to catch more fish than time on the water.
The baits I'm using really depends on what the fish are eating (as simple as that sounds). While I do have a select few baits I have utmost confidence in, sometimes they just don't get bit. Or in a particular situation I have more confidence in a bait that isn't one of my stand by's.

Though it seems I buy a new lure very few days, I still fish with the same 3-5, regardless of the circumstances.
As far as gagetry goes, I think too many gadgets blur the line between the kayak and the power boat. To me once the paddle is replaced by something else, it's no longer a kayak. Could/Should you fish from something motorized or peddaled? Absolutely, if that suits your needs or desires. Same goes for mods made for standing. Go for it if that's your preferred mode. For me, I'd rather paddle to a location then wade or cruise the beach or shoreline.

At least for me, using fly tackle continues to be more and more minimalist as I progress. I keep trying different fly patterns for variety but keep coming back to just a few that seem to work well most of the time. I know that if I just had more time to fish and learn the water I would catch more, without a lot of extra "stuff". So retro for me, no doubt.

You and me Bro...I started out trying to carry everything along but have severely trimmed what I take along now. I pay less attention to color, and more attention to action for my baits.Heywood wrote:Old School 8)

I keep it pretty basic:
Topwater (chrome or bone)
soft plastic(jerk bait, paddle tail, or dart)
stick shadd (gold or white)
johnson spoon (gold or silver)
the only color variations I use depend if its sunny or cloudy and if the water is clear or muddy.

Not even close to knowing all Paul, I was just very lucky to meet and learn from some of the best anglers around here. I also had the fever real bad when I came here, so I fished a lot, 3 or 4 times a week every week. I also read everything I could get my hands on, and attended fishing seminars as often as I could. JayB used to call me the sponge.
After a few years I realized how succint Merril's advice was.

Now that is something that will stick with me. Now I have a great plan to pass on to others to help them catch more fish.John wrote:The two biggest factors to cacthing fish as told to me by Merril Chandler
