4 LED headlamp with 3 lighting levels and red flip filter
$42 at REI. Can be found for less. Pretty bulletproof, good water resistance (IPX4), will last for years.

Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley
I recently got 2 off of ebay, LEDs, $5 each, free shipping from China.
No red light option but has a strobe. Other bummer is that they are Miner style w/ the 3 straps.
The duracell ones from walmart do not last for me, we'll see how long these do.

outward bound recommends 1 LED type headlamp with 2 spare sets of batteries.
A headlamp is highly recommended to keep your hands free. Avoid halogen bulbs to prolong
battery life
another choice

could also try candlepower forum, good luck, John

Their reasoning is for battery life. As they will be out in the woods for extended periods of time, battery life is a big concern. As fishermen, we don't have that concern, or at least it isn't as big as the night time hiker.brokenarrowjbe wrote:outward bound recommends 1 LED type headlamp
Most headlamps are used sparingly by fishermen. We generally don't keep them on for hours at a time. The 4 LED models give you really bright light when needed but you can also use the lower light setting.
I have never run down the batteries in mine, even on a 5 day camping trip.

Head lamp will last long time but add in one Hank and life expectancy goes to minus scale.
I gotta have one tho, looks comfy and uncumbersome, is this a word>?
The Petzl is a great light. I love mine. I use it most of the time for mornings before daylight and keep it with me for when trips run long.
BUT if you want a BRIGHT light for a good price, Lowes has one made by Remington for under $40 that is incredibly bright.

Panther vision hat. I get them on Ebay, though not for a while.

Two led's pointing where your hat bill points, one switch, two watch batteries.
This one's $14.95 but you can shop them a bit. I think Lowes was carrying them for a while. I have two that I've had for three or four years, replaced batteries. One I wear at work a lot, gets wet often.

If you can take care of your light, go big and spend the money on a Petzl or Princeton. They are well worth the money and will give great value.
Many can't take care of them. Not a slam, it's just the way it is. Years ago I'd never been able to spend money on good sunglasses. I sat on them or lost them within 6 months of purchase no matter how much they cost. Now, a pair of glasses last years so the expense is justified. Same thing on a headlamp. I'd have lost it in the water or some how ruined it.
If you buy one of the inexpensive lights, I would expect that you'll do it quite often. My 5 year old Petzl works as well today as it did the day I bought it.
