Which do you use and why?

I use both. Hard Mason for the basic leader and fluorocarbon for the tippet

I use Tapered Mono for leaders, with Flouro Tippets.
Fluorocarbon is so much more abrasion resistant, and I have a Ladyfish/Trout habit. If Leader or Tippet gets short I replace as needed. I can make a leader last a long time that way. Of course before I change the Leader there may be two/three sizes of Flouro in it.
Only issue is that Flouro doesn't break down. Mono does after a long time. Most manuf have quit putting dates on Flouro.
I usually try to buy my Tippet material when it's on Sale! Then keep it in the dark, mono leaders the same. Because I have to go to Delaware for work, I buy from an Orvis Factory Outlet Store, just convenient.

That's just what I do, everybody has their own preferences. Not wrong just different.

Everyone does it differently, but I construct my own leaders since they're both cheaper and more versatile. Usually use Seaguar blue label Fluoro for every piece, since it's by far the strongest and most abrasion-resistant leader I've found. I apply some chapstick to each end before tying them together (always with a Slim Beauty) so the knots slide more smoothly. If I'm fishing Gurglers I'll switch to mono since it floats, but beware of mono leaders degrading over time and breaking at inopportune moments.

Try this formula for an 8wt rod and you won't be disappointed:

7 feet of 40# Seaguar fluoro
Slim beauty knot to 3 feet of 30# Seaguar fluoro
Slim beauty knot to 2 feet of 15 or 20# Seaguar fluoro

Mono for topwater, flouro for most of the rest. I like rio, seaguar, and yozuri in no particular order. Each has an application. I have found many of the cheaper ones suck, you definitely get what you pay for.

Thanks guys, great information here. I have been using Seaguar Flouro with good luck and did some testing on mono to see how it worked. Overall I like the flouro better, but do feel mono has its place. Was using mono during the Salty Fly TX and lost a fish (one that would have looked excellent on our board ) at my feet just before landing, but after downsizing to 10# that day and the trout had some nice fangs I need to give mono its due respect.

As for the Hard mono, whats the difference between it and regular mono?

I was gonna suggest you hold both hard and soft in your hand as the difference is quite evident but I really didn't want to explain how I knew.

Gotcha, I'm hoping it feels hard.

Hard is used for fly leaders, soft is used in snoopy poles.
