Ft. Desoto on the weekend?

Post by Chadryan »

I am taking my dad an a couple other friends who are all fairly new to paddle-fishing out in a couple weeks. I was thinking I would go to Ft. Desoto because I have never fished there before. However, I would rather just fish something closer if the fort gets really packed on Saturdays.

What do you guys think? Is Ft. Desoto too crowded on the weekends, or is it worth the trip over there. My other option is to hit 4th St./Gandy/Weedon/Picnic Island flats. This is where I usually fish because they are about 5 minutes from my house. So far I have not run into any big crowds yet.

Thanks,
-Chad

Wheedon can get very busy, and parking hard to find, if you get there late.
Good Luck.

Fort Desoto is a great place for newbies for a variety of reasons: good fishing, beautiful water and scenery, you can get out of the wind. Not to mention the the ease of parking.

I personally prefer going there on Sundays, but that's mainly because of significantly less traffic when coming from Lakeland. I've never found it too busy, unless there is some crazy tourney there.

I think you should scratch both those places off your list and go to CRB.

There are no fish on the east side of the bay.
