I would say that typically reds do not tail while feeding amoungst mullet. When redfish are with the mullet they are usually eating what the mullet are kicking up and not rooting around as they are when tailing.

This is just what I have observed. Someone may have different experiences.

I am no expert but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. :D

Tailing is a feeding pattern not an opinion. I agree with Redfisher. I'm no expert but from what I know, he's got it right.

I would have to agree with you guys. I don't believe the redfish tail while in schools of mullet. I think they're at the bottom gnawing on whatever the mullet stir up. At least that's been my experience. Caught my biggest redfish (29 & 30") within mullet that were so thick you could walk on em and I didn't see a single tail! Man, I'm due for another one of those days.

I have seen redfish tails in mullet schools but they are not the norm.

On another note, most people confuse mullet tails for redfish tails.

Like Todd stated, I have seen them tail in the mullet schools but it is on rare occassions. They are generallylike the other said, on the bottom going after what the mullet kicked up. Todd is right about people mistaken mullet tails as redfish tail, I was one of them when I first started.

My very limited experience of seeing tailing redfish says No, not normally.

The onlyschools of reds I've seen tailing have not been in with a big school of mullet. Or maybe the mullet were incognito. :D

I have seen a few straglers tailing with the mullet, but then I've also seen some tailing Sheepshead with the mullet.

I've seen small ones tail with mullet. At least that's what I think they were. Normally they'll hang with them picking up what the mullet kick up and/or picking off the small bait that gets within reach. Its a good time to throw hard baits or maybe a spoon.

how about confusing sheepshead tails for redfish tails?

RF, CnF, and RnR got it right ...on the other hand, Todd and Larry have been fooled by large mullet tails :) ....and they're not the only ones

Have confused sheepshead tails with mullet tails. Have confused mullet tails with redfish tails. They are mixed in but not tailing (usually). Of course they run together so there is no 100 percent right answer here. I usually see reds actually tail where they are not running with the mullet and are in reasonably calm waters.

I catch almost all my tailing reds around schools of mullet, not in them.
