Hook removal technique

Post by Jim Sammons LJKF »

Here is our latest instructional video on removing a hook from your flesh.

It should be noted that you need to carry a pair of cutters strong enough to cut through large, strong hooks. Small bolt cutters or heavy line mans pliers will do it, your needle nose or dykes are often not strong enough.

So that was cool, and major major props to that guy for taking a hit for the team, but I bet its not that easy when the barb goes in....I noticed he just barely avoided the barb, but still cool

I've used this method, saw it from Roland Martin.

I actually works very well, even with the barb deeply embedded. What he did not say in the video is that you need to be pushing down on the hook (toward your flesh) before and during the pullout. This releases the barb under the skin.

It really helps to have another person do the pulling. I had to do it once by tying the line to a cleat and yanking my hand. I did the "one, two, three" flinch about ten times before i finally made the move.
